Most people are told that a 9-to-5 job is the safe path. I spent years chasing that safety — and kept finding the opposite.
I faced contracts that quietly expired, managers who made the environment toxic, or roles that had simply run out of room to grow, I cycled through job after job searching for stability that never seemed to last. It was exhausting — and somewhere along the way, it became clarifying.
If the "secure" route kept failing me, why wasn't I betting on myself?
From Frustration to a Brand with a Purpose
That question is what led me to launch IslandWear Fashion in 2019 — an activewear and streetwear brand rooted in the vibrant, bold energy of the islands. I was born in Jamaica, and when I looked at the activewear market, I kept seeing the same thing: neutral palettes, generic silhouettes, nothing that reflected the color and life I grew up around. I wanted to build something that felt alive.
I founded IslandWear Fashion out of a necessity for both professional independence and creative expression. I wanted to bridge the gap between high-performance gear and the unapologetic aesthetic of island living. I didn't want to start "just another clothing line", I want the brand to prove that sustainability and bold, "non-basic" style could coexist in the fitness space.
I didn't have investors or a safety net. I was still working full-time and using my earnings to fund every step of the business — product development, branding, and marketing all came out of whatever I could set aside each month.
The First Sale, COVID, and Starting Over
The journey wasn’t an overnight success. The first three months after launch were humbling. I poured my energy into user-generated content marketing and community-building before a single order came in. When that first sale finally arrived, I felt it. I still remember that customer — I don't think any founder ever forgets the person who first believed in their brand.
Then 2020 hit. COVID forced me to shut down the store entirely, like it did for so many small business owners. The path has been a literal rollercoaster but instead of walking away, I used that time to regroup, refine the brand, and come back stronger. I officially registered my business as a California LLC and IslandWear Fashion reopened in 2021. The journey since has been proof that the setbacks were part of the process.
Why IslandWear Fashion Exists
The activewear industry is saturated — but it's also still surprisingly basic. Bold, island-inspired designs that celebrate color, movement, and cultural identity are still rare. IslandWear Fashion exists to fill that gap, for those who aren't afraid to live Boldy and vibrantly and they have no desire to blend in at the gym or on the street.
Today, IslandWear Fashion is focused on leaning into small-batch production and sustainable practices to ensure our "vibrant living" philosophy extends to how we treat the planet.
For those feeling the fragility of the modern workspace: Don't wait for a contract to end to start building your own foundation. The journey is rarely a straight line, but the view from the driver’s seat is worth it.
Every piece I create is an extension of that original question I asked myself during one too many job searches: what would I build if I stopped waiting for permission?
The answer turned out to be exactly this.
